Our Move to Kansas City

Hey, friends! Happy Monday! I still can’t believe the weather outside here today! I think the snow is so pretty, but the wind and the cold are brutal! At least it is making it seem more like the holiday season! πŸ™‚ So today I am sharing about our move to Kansas City! Many of you asked to learn more about our moving experience, so I will share what I can! πŸ™‚

Reason for Our Move

First of all, this is Ashton and I’s first time buying a home together, so it has been a big deal for us! Our previous home has been in my family for many years, and this was our first time going through the whole home searching and buying process together. We both grew up in St. Joseph, MO, but we both knew that it was time to grow together again and move to a place with more opportunity. We have always loved Kansas City, and Ashton recently got a great job in the KC area! So it all worked out!

It has been a big change for me, as our previous home is the one I grew up in as well. I am really excited, though, because I have a strong desire to move forward at this time in my life. I also love our new home! πŸ™‚ Luckily, Lana has also been doing so well with the transition. She is so happy to go back to school and be learning again! She’s also already making new friends. I’m so proud of that girl! πŸ™‚

The Moving Process

To be honest, the moving process was brutal, and I’m so glad that it’s over! Our previous home needed A LOT of updating before selling it, and it seems so hard to find anyone willing to work on a home these days. So we did it all by ourselves! πŸ™‚

We painted the entire house together from top to bottom and so many other things. Thankfully, we did have some family to help with the few things that I couldn’t help Ashton with. I have to say that I’m pretty proud of what we accomplished in such a short time. I even did the kitchen countertops all by myself (insane).

I think it’s important to mention (and most of you know) that we got a new puppy – RIGHT DURING all of this. Never again. Haha. I was on a list for a year to get her, and it just ended up landing during the move. We love her, though, and she’s already growing so fast!

My Advice If You Plan to Move

It took us just about 2-3 weeks to find our new home, and that was because we were literally driving down to Kansas City to meet our realtor almost every night of the week. It was exhausting. One thing that really helped was researching a TON on Zillow ahead of time. It was so easy to narrow down the houses we wanted ahead of time by looking over EVERYTHING online. Plus, it’s also very important to have a really good realtor. Try to find one who is extremely proactive, trustworthy, and great at communicating. We were very lucky when we found ours! πŸ™‚

If you’re planning on moving, make sure to have as much money saved up as possible. That sounds like a no brainer, but it really is so helpful. If you have money already saved up for a down payment and closing costs, it makes your life WAY easier when buying a home.

Hire the movers. Enough said. So thankful for our family who helped us carry a TON of furniture.

I asked Ashton at the end of this what he would recommend. He said to start fixing up anything that needs fixed in your house AS SOON as you start discussing even the possibility of moving. That way you aren’t doing it ALL at the very last minute. Poor Ashton was removing 5 layers of flooring in the kitchen at the same time he was starting a new job in a different city AND also driving down to look at houses.

Getting Settled After the Move

I recently read something about “post move exhaustion”. It is SO true! It’s definitely fun to start thinking about how you will decorate your new home, but taking some time to recuperate after moving is so important. Don’t push yourself too hard. Get the most important things unpacked and put the rest away later when you have more energy.

We are finally mostly unpacked and getting settled into our new home. πŸ™‚ We are also very close to closing on our previous home! I’m so thankful for all of you who have continued following along with our journey during all of this. It means so much! Now I just plan on enjoying all of the Christmas decor that we just put up and watching ALL the Christmas movies. πŸ™‚
